Wind is the load nobody quotes for
A trough on a concession road is a long aluminum aerofoil with an open top, fixed to a building on a site with nothing upwind of it. Sustained wind gets under the outer lip and works at it, and unlike snow load, which arrives and then leaves, this is a fatigue load applied thousands of times a season. The hangers loosen slowly rather than failing in one event, which is why the trough looks fine right up until the run drops off the fascia.
Hanger spacing that is perfectly adequate in a sheltered Collingwood subdivision is not adequate here. We tighten spacing on exposed elevations and screw into solid wood rather than into the aluminum fascia capping, which is where a surprising number of rural hangers end up and which holds nothing.
Drifting snow compounds it. An open field lets snow travel, and it piles against the building rather than settling evenly. A north or west eave on an exposed lot can be carrying several times the load of the sheltered side of the same house, and the run that fails will always be that one.
Steel roofs deliver water faster than trough can take it
Agricultural steel is everywhere around Clearview, on houses as well as barns and shops. Water on steel does not soak in or slow down. It runs the full pitch and arrives at the eave at speed, so a trough sized by roof area alone will simply be overshot in a heavy rain: the water leaves the roof on a trajectory and lands past the outer lip.
The position of the trough matters as much as its size on a steel roof. It sits closer under the drip edge and slightly higher than it would on an asphalt roof, and on steeper pitches the outer lip has to be high enough to catch water that is genuinely moving. Get that wrong and the owner concludes the trough is too small, buys a bigger one, and it overshoots that as well.
Steel also sheds its snow in slabs, exactly as a chalet roof does. On a barn or a shop that usually means the trough on the long elevation gets flattened every second or third winter unless there is snow retention above it, and on an outbuilding it is often more sensible to leave the eave bare and manage the runoff at the ground instead.
Rural runoff has nowhere to be sent
In town a downspout extension carries water to a lawn that drains to a road and a storm sewer. On a rural property there is no such destination, and the water you take off the roof has to be put somewhere that does not create a second problem: not against the foundation, not into the septic bed, and not into a low spot that becomes a rink in the driveway turnaround.
The most common thing we find is not a failing trough at all. It is a building with no trough on an elevation that has been discharging along the wall for years, and a trench in the grade to prove it. Once the backfill against a wall has been washed out, water is arriving beside the footing every time it rains, and that is a foundation problem, not a gutter problem.
Outbuildings are cheap to do at the same time as the house because the crew, the coil and the roll former are already on the site. If the barn or the shop matters to you, ask for it on the same quote rather than as a separate visit later.

Does a barn or a shop actually need eavestrough? +
It depends on what is below the eave. If the runoff washes along a foundation, floods a doorway, or ices over a path that gets used in winter, then yes, and it is a small job when the crew is already on site for the house. If the roof discharges onto open ground that drains away, bare eaves are a legitimate choice and we will say so. Snow slide is a real argument against trough on a steel outbuilding.
Why does the trough only pull away on the west side of the house? +
Because that is the exposed elevation. Wind fatigues the hangers on the open side, and drifting snow loads that eave far more heavily than the sheltered one. The trough is the same on both sides and its life is not. We tighten hanger spacing on the exposed runs rather than treating the whole house identically.
Will a steel roof damage new eavestrough? +
It can, in two ways, and both are solvable. Sliding snow flattens trough hung in the slide path, which snow retention above it prevents. Fast-moving water overshoots trough positioned for an asphalt roof, which the mounting height and the outer lip position correct. A steel roof is not a reason to skip trough, it is a reason to hang it differently.
