Why eavestrough fails here
Every spring the same physics play out on Collingwood homes: months of snowpack melt in a few warm weeks, and the entire roof's worth of water has to leave through the eavestrough. Undersized trough overflows at the corners, dumps water at the foundation, and is a big reason basements here get damp in March and April. Eavestrough repair in Collingwood
Most of the trough on Collingwood homes does not need replacing. It needs rehanging. Ice load pulls a run off slope over three or four winters, and once the water stops moving toward the downspout everything downstream of that low point starts to fail. Here is what we actually fix, and roughly what each one takes.
Sagging runs and lost slope
Stand back from the house on a dry day and sight along the trough against the fascia line. A dip you can see from the driveway is holding several litres of water, and that standing water is what freezes and levers the hangers out. We pull the run, replace spike-and-ferrule with hidden hangers into solid wood, and reset it at roughly a quarter inch of fall for every ten feet. If the fascia behind it is soft, hangers will not hold and the fascia has to be dealt with first, so we check that before quoting a rehang.
Leaking seams, corners and end caps
Seamless trough only has joints at the corners and the ends, which is exactly where the drips come from. The sealant in those joints is the shortest-lived part of the whole system. Resealing is a cheap visit and it is worth doing before the water that has been running down the corner board rots the trim behind it.
Downspouts, elbows and extensions
A downspout that discharges a foot from the wall is putting the entire roof's runoff against the foundation. This is the single most common cause of a damp Collingwood basement in March, and it is also the cheapest thing on this page to correct. We add extensions that carry water clear of the backfill, and we move downspouts when the existing ones are in the wrong place rather than pretending they are fine.
Ice-damaged and crushed sections
Sliding snow off a steep or metal roof will flatten a trough in one event. If it has happened once it will happen again, so replacing the section on its own is half a repair. The other half is snow retention on the slope above it, or moving the trough out of the slide path.
New eavestrough installation
New trough is formed on site. The aluminum comes on a coil, runs through a roll former on the truck, and comes out as one continuous length cut to your wall. That is what seamless means, and it is why a proper install has no joints for water to find along the run.
Seamless eavestrough sizing for Collingwood snow loads
Five-inch trough is the southern-Ontario default and it is undersized for this area. A Collingwood roof does not shed rain steadily through the year, it holds months of snowpack and then releases it over a few warm weeks in March. We quote 6-inch trough with 3 x 4 downspouts on most homes here. On a steep roof or a metal roof the water arrives faster still, and the extra capacity is the difference between draining and overflowing at the corners.

Steep pitches throw water past the trough entirely if the trough sits too low, and they drop snow into it in slabs. Hanger spacing tightens, the trough sits higher relative to the drip edge, and snow retention above it stops becoming optional.

How the install day runs
A typical house is one day. Old trough comes off first, which is when the fascia behind it becomes visible and any rot gets found. We tell you about it then, with a price, before anything new goes up. New trough is formed, hung, sealed at the corners, and the downspouts get run last so their placement can follow where the water actually collects.
Gutter guards and gutter protection
Gutter protection has a bad name locally, and it earned it. The snap-in plastic screens sold at the big-box stores ice up, then the ice sheet lifts them out and takes the trough hangers with it. We do not install those.
What works here is a rigid micro-mesh panel fastened to the trough itself, not wedged under the shingle course. Maple keys, pine needles and the fine grit that comes off an ageing asphalt roof stay out; meltwater goes through. On a treed lot in Collingwood or Thornbury it is the difference between cleaning the trough twice a year and not cleaning it.
What gutter guards will not do
They will not stop an ice dam. Nothing fastened to the trough will, because the dam forms above it, on the roof, out of heat escaping the house. Anyone selling you guards as an ice-dam fix is selling you the wrong product. Read why ice dams form before you spend money on the symptom.
Soffit, fascia and the eave as one system
The trough hangs off the fascia, the fascia caps the rafter tails, and the soffit under it feeds air into the attic. They fail together and they are cheapest to fix together, because they are all reached off the same ladder set.
Fascia installation and repair
Aluminum fascia capping is a cover, not a repair. If the wood behind it has gone soft, capping over it hides the rot and gives the hangers nothing to bite. We replace the sub-fascia where it has failed and cap over sound wood, and we will show you the difference on your own house rather than asking you to take it on trust.
Vented soffit and attic airflow
Vented soffit is the intake half of attic ventilation. If it is blocked with insulation, or someone installed solid panel where vented should have gone, the exhaust vents at the ridge pull air from inside the house instead of from outside. That is a heat-loss path, and heat loss is what builds the ice dam that wrecks the trough. When we are already at the eave, checking the intake costs nothing.

Is eavestrough related to my ice damming? +
Partly. Gutters full of ice are a symptom; the cause is heat loss melting the snowpack. But undersized or sagging eavestrough makes the problem worse by holding water at the fascia. We look at the whole eave, roof edge, ventilation, and trough, rather than just swapping the metal.
